Presented by the American Film Institute and the Skirball Cultural Center, Cinema's Legacy is an ongoing series of conversations where contemporary filmmakers--including some of cinema's greatest producers, directors, writers and actors--screen work they credit with encouraging and shaping their art. Now in its seventh year, this acclaimed series has featured numerous notable filmmakers including Norman Jewison, Ivan Reitman, Dennis Hopper, William Friedkin, Forest Whitaker, David Cronenberg, Judd Apatow, Jason Reitman and John Singleton.

GREAT EXPECTATIONS

Join American screenwriter, director, and producer Chris Carter - best known as the creator of the award-winning television series THE X-FILES - for a screening and discussion of a film that has influenced his own work:
David Lean's Oscar-winning adaptation of Charles Dickens's literary masterpiece GREAT EXPECTATIONS.

A Q&A with Carter will precede the screening.


About Chris Carter
Chris Carter is director/writer/producer of the forthcoming X-FILES feature film, I WANT TO BELIEVE, set for release in July 2008.

Carter began his career as a writer for Surfing Magazine. He got his start in the entertainment business in 1985 when Jeffrey Katzenberg, then chairman of Walt Disney Studio Entertainment, read one of Carter's screenplays and signed him to a development deal. Carter went on to develop projects for Twentieth Century Fox, where, in 1993, he created THE X-FILES. THE X-FILES was the winner of the Golden Globe for Best Drama in 1995 and 1997, Emmy-nominated three times for Best Drama, and winner of a Peabody Award for Excellence in Broadcasting.

Chris's production company -- Ten Thirteen Productions -- has been responsible for 201 episodes of THE X-FILES, 67 episodes of MILLENNIUM, 9 episodes of HARSH REALM, 13 episodes of THE LONE GUNMAN, and the original X-FILES feature film, FIGHT THE FUTURE.

DR. ZHIVAGO

DOCTOR ZHIVAGO tells the story of Yury Zhivago, a man torn between his love for two women while caught in the tumultuous course of 20th century Russian history. The film went on to garner 10 Academy Award nominations, bringing home five, including Best Cinematography and Best Adapted Screenplay.

AFI ranks the film as seventh on AFI's 100 Years... 100 Passions list, and 39th on AFI's 100 Years... 100 Movies - 10th Anniversary Edition.

About Brad Bird
Brad Bird is the director of the Academy® Award-winning films RATATOUILLE and THE INCREDIBLES from Pixar Animation Studios. Prior to joining Pixar, Bird wrote and directed the critically acclaimed 1999 animated feature, THE IRON GIANT, which won the International Animated Film Society's Annie Award for Outstanding Achievement in an Animated Theatrical Feature.

Bird began his first animated film at the age of 11, and finished it nearly three years later. The film brought him to the attention of Walt Disney Studios where, at age 14, he was mentored by Milt Kahl, one of a distinguished group of Disney's legendary animators known as the "Nine Old Men." Bird eventually worked as an animator at Disney and other studios.

Bird's credits include acting as executive consultant on THE SIMPSONS and KING OF THE HILL, the two longest running and most celebrated animated series on television.

Brad is currently preparing his next project, 1906, a live-action film.
